About This Project
The Actor Boy project interrogates the quotidian reality of the contemporary post-colonial world through the use of a performance persona, Actor Boy. Rooted in a Jamaican festival that peaked around the time of emancipation, Actor Boy is an invented character that manifests the possible futures that could have emerged from that event, confronting the present with the hopes and aspirations of a different time.
The project places Actor Boy in everyday locations in the Caribbean and North America and uses photography and installation to convey Actor Boy's interactions and observations. Situating viewers in the shifting terrain between image, artifact and meaning the work projects the alien identity of people living in the diaspora.
